The 10 must-see attractions in San Vito Lo Capo
The beach
The long white sandy beach, which has been awarded the Blue Flag multiple times is not only charming because of its beauty but also due to its location at the base of the magnificent Monte Monaco. Stretching almost 3 km, there are sections of public beach amidst equipped beaches where sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented. Additionally, there is a designated area for individuals with disabilities (Spiaggia Zero Barriere). The beach of San Vito Lo Capo is connected to the village and can be easily reached in a 10-minute walk from the most distant areas (a shuttle service is available during the summer). Despite the fact that summer is the most enjoyable season, we can't deny that this stretch of coastline displays incredible attractiveness in spring and fall. Just a ray of sunshine an be magical... it's a little luxury worth experiencing!
The Sanctuary
The heart of San Vito Lo Capo is the beautiful square where the Sanctuary-Fortress stands majestically. It was built around the
small chapel devoted to Saint Vitus the Martyr. This building originally served to protect the many worshippers from the frequent pirate attacks of that era; today it also hosts a small but interesting museum of sacred artifacts.
Chapel of Saint Crescenzia
This small Moorish-style chapel, built in honor of Saint Vito's nurse in the 13th century, at the gates of the village, does not go unnoticed. The legend tells that right in this place, Crescenzia died of fright after turning around to take one last look at the
village of Conturrana, which was collapsing. Close to this location, there is an old watchtower known as the Torre dell'Isulidda.
The Lighthouse
Its beam of light has been brightening this coastline since August 1, 1959. Wanted by the Bourbons to make navigation safer for passing vessels, it gives a unique charm to the bay; certainly one of the undisputed symbols of San Vito Lo Capo. A walk beneath the 43 meter high tower is a must and also very romantic. Near the lighthouse stands a round tower known as the Torrazzo, likely used in ancient times to defend against pirate attacks.
Tonnara del Secco
Unfortunately, little remains of the ancient Tonnara del Secco, the tuna fishery of San Vito Lo Capo, established in 1411 and permanently abandoned in 1965. Yet its charm remains strong enough to be included in the list of Places of the Heart for voting in 2106. Located 3 km from San Vito Lo Capo, at the western edge of the Gulf of Castellammare, this appealing and fascinating place has often been used as a location for famous films, including "Cefalonia" and several episodes of "Commissario Montalbano."
Saint Margherita Bay
This beautiful beach, situated along a stretch of unspoiled coastline, lies at the entrance of San Vito Lo Capo, nestled between Castelluzzo and Macari, two small hamlets of the village. The surrounding landscape is a true spectacle, with the hills of the Valley of the Olive Trees behind and the cliffs of Cala Mancina on the sides, along with the profile of Monte Cofano. A free train departs from the parking lot and takes you along the coast to discover the beauty of the small solitary coves (a bit less secluded in summer).
The Plain of Egitarso
Embrace with a glance the countryside and the beach, Monte Monaco and the lighthouse, and sometimes even the farthest tip of the Gulf of Castellammare...nothing could be simpler! Just drive or, if you prefer, walk up to the Plain of Egitarso, a wide strip of land that protects the township on the west side with its rocky walls. You will cherish this panorama in your hearts, and take some stunning photos!
Cove of the Sea Ox
Are you looking for something special, something truly unique? Don't miss a day in this corner of paradise, just a stone's throw from San Vito Lo Capo. We are not exaggerating... In 2015, Legambiente recognized this site as Italy's most beautiful bay.
Eat the Couscous
Among the dishes that you absolutely cannot miss tasting during your vacation in San Vito Lo Capo is couscous, which is the festival dish, of course! Whether it's fish or meat, it doesn't matter, as long as it's prepared by hand with fresh and genuine ingredients. Feel free to ask the chef for the recipe; the people of San Vito are eager to share their "couscous ritual".... and you will be conquered by its deliciousness and its ancient heritage.
Go to the Belvedere of Macari at sunset
Do you want to amaze someone with special effects? What could be better than a sunset? The one over the Gulf of Cofano is unique! Try it to believe it!
